Going well comes first, on purpose

Two conference records to a page, cut apart for the file. The good column sits on the left, because the order you write in is the order you end up saying it.

Why this one looks like this

The order of the columns is the design

Most conference forms lead with concerns, or with a grid of scores. Whatever is at the top of the page is what you talk about first, because you fill it in as you go.

Here, Going well is the left column and Next steps is the right. Not because problems do not matter, but because a parent who hears something true and specific about their child in the first minute listens differently for the next ten.

It also makes you find something. A form with no space for it lets a hard conference become entirely hard, and there is always something.

A parent who hears one true good thing first will hear the rest of it.

Half a page, because you write less than you think

Fifteen minutes of conversation produces about five lines of usable notes. A full page invites you to fill it, and filling it means writing during the conference instead of listening.

Two to a page also means a class of twenty-four is twelve sheets rather than twenty-four, and they go straight into the file cut apart.

One thing worth doing

Fill in the left column before they arrive

Write the good thing in advance, while you have the child's work in front of you and nobody is waiting. Thirty seconds each, done the night before.

Then the conference starts with something specific rather than something you reached for, and a parent can tell the difference immediately.
